We thought we had made it to the other side. Our support for recovery began in our own home. She is our why. September of 2018, it happened, one day at a time, her sobriety began.

In April of 2019 she landed what she believed to be her dream job managing an abused woman’s residential home (safe house). She had found her purpose. They loved her and she loved them, and so she had made the decision that victims assistance was where she needed to be. She was promoted to case manager just under one year later. During her employment, she had settled an old (2017) drug related charge that meant probation.

DSS Grants require annual audits and during their 2020 audit, some of her docs were missing and a new background check was ordered. DSS and other grants prohibit anyone from working in this facility filled with woman whose shoes she had walked in herself. She was asked to resign until the probation was removed from her record. Her co-workers were in an uproar and encouraged her to fight the decision. But it was already too late.

Because the very next day, her words were “no matter how good I am today I cannot break free from my past”. She went to the doctor that day after and was prescribed a narcotic. A few months later, one of the same prescription narcotics she was being prescribed, this time given to her by a “friend” ended up being fake. It was fentanyl. She passed away 8-20-20.

We cannot take back what has been done. We will be the change we need to see is this world. We are her voice. And so, we are telling her story. Caylee’s Mom - Forever 23
